Distinguishing between an original photo and an AI-edited one has become increasingly challenging in today’s times, and it often requires meticulous scrutiny. To address this issue, Google Photos, via its new blog post, confirmed that it is now adding a new feature that will determine if an image has been edited with artificial intelligence (AI).
Google Photos app will now start including an ‘AI Info’ within the metadata of the images to let anyone easily check whether the image was generated using synthetic AI methods. These AI labels will only be added to photos that have been edited using Google Photos’ AI tools, such as Magic Editor and Magic Eraser.
These guidelines are based on standards from The International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) to indicate that the available images are generated using generative AI. When users open a photo on the Google Photos app and scroll to the bottom of the ‘Details’ section, a new note will indicate if the image was ‘Edited with Google AI.’
This will include credits to the tool that was used to edit the image as well as a ‘Digital Source Type’ label, which will highlight whether generative AI or any other editing tool has been used or not. Moreover, images that have been altered using other image editing tools, such as Best Take or Add Me, will also have specific information in the ‘AI Info’ label.
