India has introduced a new digital address system called DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) to replace traditional PIN codes, bringing greater accuracy and efficiency to address-based services. Developed by the Department of Posts, DIGIPIN assigns a unique 10-digit code to every property using precise geographic coordinates. This digital system is designed to facilitate faster, more accurate deliveries, navigation, emergency response, and address verification, all while being compatible with modern digital platforms.
DIGIPIN was officially announced by the Ministry of Communications on May 27, 2025, as a part of its broader goal to modernise India’s addressing infrastructure. It introduces the concept of “Address-as-a-Service” (AaaS), allowing citizens, businesses, and government agencies to use verified digital locations in a secure and standardised way.
How is DIGIPIN different from regular PIN codes?
India’s current postal system uses 6-digit PIN codes, which denote large geographical areas—sometimes covering multiple towns or localities. This often leads to confusion, incorrect deliveries, and delays, especially in areas with similar names or shared PIN codes.
DIGIPIN overcomes these issues with key differences:
Precise identification: Each DIGIPIN corresponds to a specific property, not a general area, using latitude and longitude coordinates.
Better accuracy: Unlike broad PIN codes, DIGIPIN offers location-level granularity, reducing errors in navigation and logistics.
Grid-based mapping: India has been digitally mapped into small grid squares, and each grid has its own unique 10-digit code, allowing for highly accurate digital addresses.
Platform-neutral: DIGIPIN is open-source and interoperable, enabling seamless integration with GIS, e-commerce, logistics, and emergency response systems.
Improved efficiency: It supports both urban and rural delivery systems, ensuring equal accuracy in hard-to-reach or unorganised areas.
Supports modern services: It can be used across various platforms, applications, and devices, making it suitable for digital governance and smart city initiatives.
How to get your DIGIPIN
The process to get your DIGIPIN is simple and accessible online. The Department of Posts has launched an official portal for this purpose.
Visit the official DIGIPIN website: Go to https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home.
Enter your location: Use your current location or manually search for your address on the digital map interface.
Find your code: The portal will generate your unique 10-digit DIGIPIN based on the exact geographic coordinates of your property.
Use the code: You can use your DIGIPIN for deliveries, address verification, government services, and more.
Why is it important for you
DIGIPIN brings India’s addressing system in line with the country’s digital transformation efforts. By using accurate coordinates, it improves last-mile delivery, strengthens emergency services, and supports data-driven governance. Most importantly, it reduces dependency on area-based PIN codes that no longer reflect the complexity of India’s growing cities and towns.
DIGIPIN is expected to benefit sectors such as e-commerce, logistics, disaster management, and public service delivery, making it a foundational tool for a digitally connected India.
