Shubman Gill will be travelling with the squad to Guwahati for the second Test against South Africa, starting from November 22. Amid reports of Gill's participation being highly doubtful, BCCI shared a medical update on the Indian skipper confirming the same.

"Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day's play. He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025.

"He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly," the update read.

The 25-year-old was admitted to Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata.

Meanwhile, reports suggest Gill is highly unlikely to play in the match even if he travels. "Medical advice to Shubman is for him not to travel for it could aggravate the injury and pose a risk. But he will still travel to be with the team and help morale as the captain and leader. Having said that chances of him playing in the Test match is negligible and will be a medical miracle if he does play. It could have an impact on his long term career. He wants to push as much with the team 0-1 down and a final call will be taken on 21st after further assessment," a NDTV report quoted a source as saying.

Vice-captain Rishabh Pant will assume charge in Gill's absence.

After losing the series opener by 30 runs at the Eden Gardens last week, India are already behind 1-0 in the two-match series.

Nitish Kumar Reddy has reportedly been asked to return to the team for the second Test. Reddy was cut from the team prior to the first Test in order to participate in the unofficial ODI series against South Africa A. Reddy, a right-hander with a Test century under his belt, may once more be in the running for a spot in the playing XI.
