In a historic collaboration, Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Vladimirovich Gorbunov is set to lead a daring mission. He will rescue NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who is stranded aboard the International Space Station (ISS) due to technical failures with Boeing's Starliner spacecraft. This mission highlights international teamwork in space exploration, with Gorbunov stepping into the spotlight as a key figure.
Born on August 12, 1970, in Russia, Aleksandr Gorbunov is no stranger to space. A seasoned cosmonaut, Gorbunov has over 20 years of spaceflight experience under his belt. Having flown two major missions, he has spent more than 360 days in space. His first mission was aboard Soyuz TMA-28 from 2010 to 2011, followed by Soyuz MS-09 in 2018.

Sunita Williams has been aboard the ISS for months, following delays caused by issues with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. Initially planned to return on the Starliner, technical malfunctions left her in orbit. Now, in an extraordinary mission, Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov will bring Williams home aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft as part of NASA’s Crew-9 mission.
The rescue is expected to occur during the Crew-9 mission launch on September 28, with a rendezvous at the ISS between September 29-30. Williams is scheduled to return to Earth on October 1.
The Crew-9 mission exemplifies international cooperation in space exploration. With Gorbunov’s expertise and the support of NASA and SpaceX, Sunita Williams’ safe return will mark another milestone in space travel.
As the world watches, Aleksandr Gorbunov’s role in this rescue mission showcases his skills and underscores the importance of collaboration beyond borders.
