The New Year skies shine with more than just fireworks, as the Quadrantid meteor shower illuminates the early days of January. This celestial event peaks on the evening of 2 January and continues into the early hours of 3 January.
NASA ranks the Quadrantids as one of the best meteor showers, known for its brilliant fireball meteors. Unlike other showers, the Quadrantids have a short viewing window, but their intensity and brilliance make them exceptional.
What to Expect During the QuadrantidsUnder optimal conditions, up to 200 meteors can be seen per hour. This year, the sky is expected to favour stargazers, with the Moon only 11% full during the peak. These ideal conditions make for a perfect opportunity to catch the meteor shower, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere.
To enjoy the best view, head to a dark, open area, lie back with your feet pointing northeast, and give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness for the clearest view.

On 12 January, Mars will be closer to Earth than it has been since 2022, making it appear larger and brighter. Soon after, the Red Planet will align with Earth and the Sun, creating a stunning sight in the night sky.
Looking ahead, the Lyrid meteor shower will light up the sky in mid-April 2025. While less intense than the Quadrantids, it will last for up to three nights. These celestial events set the stage for an exciting year in astronomy.
