A small asteroid, 2024 PT5, recently grabbed attention after it was spotted near Earth. The object, around 33 feet (10 meters) wide, has been orbiting the Sun closely, but not Earth. While 2024 PT5 doesn’t pose a threat, scientists are fascinated by its possible origin.
A Surprising Discovery
The asteroid's surface was found to contain silicate minerals. These minerals match those found in lunar rocks, not typical asteroid materials. This led scientists to suspect it may have been ejected from the Moon after a large impact.
Teddy Kareta, an astronomer at Lowell Observatory, led the research. “The minerals found are similar to those in Moon rocks,” he said. “It hasn't been in space long, maybe just a few thousand years.”
Unveiling 2024 PT5’s Journey
Discovered in August 2024 by NASA's ATLAS telescope in South Africa, 2024 PT5’s unique surface caught attention. The object’s light reflection didn’t match known asteroid types. Instead, it resembled rock from the Moon.
NASA's team then closely tracked its movement. Using data from the Lowell Discovery Telescope and Mauna Kea's NASA Infrared Telescope, they confirmed the asteroid’s unusual characteristics.
Solar Radiation’s Role
To confirm the object’s origin, scientists checked its motion. Space debris, like old rockets, also move in Earth-like orbits. The difference is subtle but significant. Asteroids respond differently to solar radiation pressure than human-made debris.
Oscar Fuentes-Muñoz, a coauthor of the study, explained the findings. “Space debris is usually light and pushed by sunlight,” he said. “2024 PT5’s movement shows it is denser than space junk.”
Potential Lunar Connections
2024 PT5 is now the second known asteroid possibly from the Moon. The first, 469219 Kamo’oalewa, was discovered in 2016. These findings open doors for further lunar research.
Asteroid scientists are excited. If a lunar asteroid can be tied to a specific crater, it could unlock new lunar mysteries. The study of lunar impact processes could provide fresh insights into the Moon’s history.
This study was part of NASA’s planetary defence program, aimed at protecting Earth from potential asteroid threats.
