  • Spider hunts fish using ripples, not webs, and blends with moss and leaves.
  • DNA tests confirm it belongs to a new evolutionary group.

Deep inside Kerala’s forest streams, a hidden hunter waits. But this predator is not a bird or a snake. It is a spider that fishes for its food. Scientists have now described a new fishing spider species. The discovery has surprised arachnologists and wildlife lovers alike.

Unlike common spiders, this one does not spin big webs. Instead, it watches the water patiently. When a fish swims too close, it strikes making it fast, silent and deadly accurate.

Where Nature Still Hides Secrets

The spider was found in the Western Ghats. This mountain range is a biodiversity treasure. Cool forest streams flow through thick green vegetation. The water stays clean and undisturbed. Such places allow rare species to survive quietly. Scientists believe many creatures here remain undiscovered. Each new find tells a bigger ecological story.

The Curious Minds Behind the Discovery

The first sighting was made by Arjun Cherukutty, a research intern. He noticed unusual spiders near a forest stream. Later, he teamed up with Jithu Unni Krishnan. Both worked with the Kerala Forest Research Institute.

A local citizen scientist also helped in collecting samples. Together, they studied the spider carefully with microscopes, DNA tests and fieldwork. The result confirmed something exciting. This spider was completely new to science.

How the Spider Becomes a Fisher?

The fishing spider uses water like a hunting ground. It rests on rocks and plants near streams. Its legs sense tiny ripples in the water. Those ripples reveal moving fish. With perfect timing, the spider dives in. It grabs the fish using strong front legs. The venom finishes the job quickly and then this spider drags its catch ashore.

What Makes This Spider Unique?

The spider has a greenish-brown body. Its hair covers its legs and abdomen. This helps it blend with moss and leaves. The females grow larger than males. DNA analysis showed a unique genetic identity. It belongs to a completely new evolutionary group. This makes the discovery scientifically important.
