What is Pradosha Vrat?

Pradosha Vrat is a sacred fast observed on the Trayodashi Tithi (13th lunar day) during both Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha of every lunar month. The vrat is observed during Pradosha Kaal, the twilight period after sunset, when the Trayodashi Tithi overlaps with this time window. This time is believed to be highly auspicious for Shiva Puja, as Lord Shiva is said to be most pleased with sincere prayers offered during Pradosha Kala.

When Pradosha Vrat falls on a Saturday, it is called Shani Pradosha. Since Saturday is ruled by Lord Shani (Saturn), this particular vrat becomes doubly potent. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Shiva is considered the Guru (spiritual teacher) of Lord Shani, and their combined blessings are believed to remove even the most difficult graha doshas (planetary faults).

Pradosham Rituals and Puja Vidhi

  • Wake up before sunrise, take a bath, and wear clean or white clothes.
  • Observe a strict fast—either Nirjala (without food and water) or Phalahar (fruits and milk).
  • Clean the Shiva Linga with milk, water, honey, and bel leaves.
  • Offer incense, flowers, sandalwood paste, diya (lamp) and recite Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra or Om Namah Shivaya.
  • Light til (sesame) oil lamp, which is especially auspicious on a Saturday.
  • Some also recite Shani Chalisa or visit Shani and Shiva temples.

Devotees who perform the puja with true devotion are said to receive the combined blessings of Lord Shiva and Lord Shani, bringing peace and liberation from suffering.

Shani Pradosha Vrat 2025, falling on May 24, offers a rare and powerful spiritual opportunity for those seeking divine grace to overcome life's trials. The alignment of Lord Shiva’s mercy and Lord Shani’s justice makes this Pradosha especially impactful. Observing the vrat with faith and discipline not only aids in personal transformation but also helps in moving toward moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death).
