Nirjala Ekadashi, observed on June 6, 2025 (Friday), is one of the most sacred and powerful fasting days in the Hindu calendar. Falling during the Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month, it is considered the most important among the 24 Ekadashi Vrats observed annually. Vaishnava Nirjala Ekadashi will be observed on June 7, 2025 (Saturday). Known for its strict fasting rules, this Ekadashi is observed without consuming food or even water—hence the name Nirjala (meaning "without water").
Breaking the fast (Ekadashi Parana) must be done after sunrise on the next day (Dwadashi), ideally during Pratahkal (early morning hours). It's crucial not to break the fast-during Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi Tithi, as doing so is considered disrespectful.

Pandava Ekadashi and Bhimseni Ekadashi
Nirjala Ekadashi is also called Pandava Ekadashi, Bhimseni Ekadashi, or Bhima Ekadashi due to its association with Bhima, the second Pandava. According to Hindu legends, Bhima—known for his strong appetite—struggled to follow regular Ekadashi Vrats. Upset about this, he consulted Maharishi Vyasa, who advised him to observe just one Ekadashi—Nirjala Ekadashi—with full dedication. Following this, Bhima observed Nirjala Ekadashi with total abstinence from food and water, thus pleasing Lord Vishnu.
