Nirjala Ekadashi 2025: Pandava Ekadashi Parana Time, Fasting Rules & Types, Mantras and Hari vasara

Nirjala Ekadashi, observed on June 6, 2025 (Friday), is one of the most sacred and powerful fasting days in the Hindu calendar. Falling during the Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month, it is considered the most important among the 24 Ekadashi Vrats observed annually. Vaishnava Nirjala Ekadashi will be observed on June 7, 2025 (Saturday). Known for its strict fasting rules, this Ekadashi is observed without consuming food or even water—hence the name Nirjala (meaning "without water").

Breaking the fast (Ekadashi Parana) must be done after sunrise on the next day (Dwadashi), ideally during Pratahkal (early morning hours). It's crucial not to break the fast-during Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi Tithi, as doing so is considered disrespectful.

Why Nirjala Ekadashi is Special?

Unlike other Ekadashis, Nirjala Ekadashi is said to provide the benefits of observing all 24 Ekadashis in the year. For those who are unable to fast on every Ekadashi, this single day of penance and devotion offers spiritual and religious merit equivalent to all combined.

Pandava Ekadashi and Bhimseni Ekadashi

Nirjala Ekadashi is also called Pandava Ekadashi, Bhimseni Ekadashi, or Bhima Ekadashi due to its association with Bhima, the second Pandava. According to Hindu legends, Bhima—known for his strong appetite—struggled to follow regular Ekadashi Vrats. Upset about this, he consulted Maharishi Vyasa, who advised him to observe just one Ekadashi—Nirjala Ekadashi—with full dedication. Following this, Bhima observed Nirjala Ekadashi with total abstinence from food and water, thus pleasing Lord Vishnu.

Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat: Puja Vidhi and Rules

  • Devotees must not eat or drink anything from sunrise on Ekadashi Tithi until sunrise on Dwadashi Tithi.
  • The fast is especially challenging due to complete abstinence from water (Nirjala).
  • Take a bath early in the morning and wear clean clothes.
  • Offer prayers to Lord Vishnu with Tulsi leaves, incense, diya, fruits, and Ekadashi Mantras.
  • Reciting Vishnu Sahasranama and chanting Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya is highly beneficial.
Ekadashi for Smarthas vs Vaishnavas

Sometimes Ekadashi Vrat is recommended on two consecutive days:

  • Smarthas (householders) should observe it on the first day.
  • Vaishnavas, ascetics, and moksha seekers should fast on the second day.
  • Devotees wanting special blessings from Lord Vishnu may choose to observe the fast on both days.
Spiritual Benefits of Nirjala Ekadashi

Fasting on Nirjala Ekadashi is believed to:

  • Cleanse all sins
  • Grant spiritual upliftment
  • Provide results of 24 Ekadashi Vrats
  • Bring Lord Vishnu’s divine blessings

For those who sincerely seek devotion, discipline, and divine grace, this is the most rewarding day to connect with the divine.

Nirjala Ekadashi 2025 is not just a fasting day—it’s a deep spiritual practice rooted in tradition and devotion. Whether you are a regular follower of Ekadashi Vrat or someone looking to begin, observing Nirjala Ekadashi with sincerity and discipline can bring immense spiritual merit and inner peace.
