Modhera Sun Temple: The Modhera Sun Temple in Gujarat is one of India’s most stunning examples of ancient architecture and devotion. Located in the town of Modhera, Mehsana district, this temple was built in 1026–27 CE by King Bhima I of the Chaulukya (Solanki) dynasty. Dedicated to Surya Dev (Sun God) the temple reflects the brilliance of Maru Gurjara architecture and stands as a symbol of how science and spirituality blended seamlessly in India’s past.

Built exactly on the Tropic of Cancer, the temple was designed so that the first rays of the equinox sun would directly fall on the sanctum. Although the idol of Lord Surya no longer exists but the temple still inspires awe with its unmatched craftsmanship and cultural significance.

Modhera Sun Temple: Architectural Highlights

The temple is divided into three aligned sections; each filled with symbolism and fine artistry:

1. Surya Kund (Sacred Tank)

  • A large stepped rectangular tank surrounded by 108 miniature shrines.
  • Larger shrines are dedicated to Vishnu, Ganesh, and Shiva.
  • It once served as a holy water body for purification rituals before entering the temple.

2. Sabha Mandap (Assembly Hall)
  • An open pavilion supported by 52 intricately carved pillars, symbolizing the 52 weeks of the year.
  • Pillars and walls narrate stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas, along with celestial dancers and divine figures.

3. Guda Mandap (Sanctum Sanctorum)
  • The main sanctum where once the idol of Surya was installed.
  • Architecturally aligned with the sunrise during equinox, showcasing deep astronomical knowledge.
