Ashadha Purnima 2025: Date, Guru Purnima Significance, Vyasa Jayanti, and Rituals

Ashadha Purnima in 2025 will be observed on Thursday, July 10, with the Purnima Tithi moonrise at 7:20 PM. As per the Hindu lunar calendar, this is the fourth full moon of the year, and it holds immense religious and spiritual significance. The day is especially revered as Guru Purnima, a time to honour and worship spiritual gurus or mentors.

What Is Ashadha Purnima?

Ashadha Purnima is one of the most sacred full moon days in Hinduism. Falling in the month of Ashadha (June–July), it is an auspicious day observed through ritual worship, fasting, and spiritual practices. All Purnima Tithis are important, but Ashadha Purnima carries special reverence due to its association with Guru Purnima and Vyasa Purnima.

Guru Purnima and Vyasa Jayanti

The most prominent observance on this day is Guru Purnima, a festival dedicated to honoring one’s spiritual and academic teachers. Disciples express gratitude by offering prayers, performing aarti, and seeking blessings from their Gurus.

This day is also observed as Vyasa Purnima, commemorating the birth of Maharishi Vedavyasa, the sage who compiled the Vedas and authored the Mahabharata. This celebration is often referred to as Vyasa Jayanti and is observed with special pujas and recitations of sacred texts.

Key Rituals and Vrats on Ashadha Purnima

  1. Satyanarayana Puja: Devotees worship Lord Satyanarayana, a kind form of Lord Vishnu, and observe the Satyanarayana Vrat. The puja is performed in the evening after moonrise.
  2. Fasting Traditions: Many families follow Kula Parampara (ancestral traditions), and observe a full-day fast on Purnima Tithi, ending after the evening puja.
  3. Kokila Vrat Begins: Ashadha Purnima also marks the beginning of the Kokila Vrat, a significant observance for women seeking prosperity, marital happiness, and offspring. This vrat continues till Shravan Purnima.

Ashadha Purnima serves as a powerful reminder of the role of guidance, knowledge, and faith in one's life. Whether it is by showing devotion to Gurus, honoring Maharishi Vedavyasa, or observing family vrats, this day is all about spiritual growth and gratitude.
