In his inaugural address minutes after taking oath as the 47th US President, Donald Trump unequivocally vowed to establish American supremacy through a litany of measures.
Trump’s second inaugural address featured similar themes to his first: a sweeping indictment of the country he inherits and grand promises to fix its problems.
Eight years ago, he described “American carnage” and promised to end it immediately. On Monday, the 47th US President declared that the country’s “decline” will end immediately, ushering in “the golden age of America.”
Here are the big takeaways from Trump's inaugural address:
- Trump will issue a raft of executive orders aimed at reshaping how the United States deals with citizenship and immigration.
-“Our sovereignty will be reclaimed. Our safety will be restored. The scales of justice will be rebalanced,” Trump added. “Our top priority will be to create a nation that is proud, prosperous and free,” promised Trump.
- He vowed to fulfill campaign promises to send troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, boost domestic oil production and impose tariffs to “enrich our citizens.”
- He described America’s leadership over the last four years as incompetent and corrupt, echoing some of the darker rhetoric he promoted on a daily basis as a presidential candidate on the campaign trail.
- Trump said he is declaring a “national energy emergency” to help to bring down prices, one of his key campaign promises. “We will drill, baby, drill,” he said during his inaugural address on Monday.
- He vowed that the world's biggest economy would again see itself as "a growing nation" that expands its territory, adding that the country would plant its flag on Mars. "We will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars," he said in his inauguration speech at the US Capitol in Washington.
