Trump is joking about his wife’s large hat, saying that she nearly blew away earlier when the two stepped outside to see Biden off.

“She almost blew away,” Trump said with a laugh, joking that, “She was being elevated off the ground.”

President Donald Trump has named an acting defense secretary because his choice to lead the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth, has not yet been confirmed by the Senate.

Robert G. Salesses, deputy director of the Pentagon’s Washington Headquarters Service, will fill in, two defense officials said on the condition of anonymity to discuss an announcement that was not yet public.

The service includes all of the capitol region support services, including facilities management and the office of general counsel and others that support the military branches and Pentagon leadership. Salesses served as a Marine in the Gulf War, earning a Bronze Star.

The appointment was first reported by NBC.

Trump started giving much more casual remarks, calling them “a younger, far more beautiful crowd” than the one he had just addressed in the Rotunda.

He said although he had initially seen how sunny it was and thought “we blew it” by holding the inauguration indoors, he called the sun “deceptive” for hiding how cold it reallly was and suggested the inauguration always be held inside.

“There was no suffering in that room. It was 72 degrees. It was perfect,” Trump said.

He asked the audience what they thought of his inaugural speech.

"How was the delivery, was it good?" he said, and they cheered.

Trump said he was going to say some more “controversial” things in his speech but those close to him convinced him not to. Those would have included the “J6 hostages” and Biden’s pardons of his family members, he said.

Donald Trump  made remarks about the cold weather and praised the "beautiful audience" who had turned up.

He spoke on a stage in the U.S. Capitol's Emancipation Hall.

During Trump's inaugural speech, stock futures traded higher, with contracts on the Standard & Poor's 500 index, the Nasdaq 100 index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average trading up between 0.4% and 0.5%.

He’ll then fly aboard a military airplane to Santa Ynez, California, to unwind with his family.

Within of minutes of Trump taking office, the official White House website was updated with a new homepage featuring his image and the message, “America is back.”

“Every single day I will be fighting for you with every breath in my body. I will not rest until we have delivered the strong, safe and prosperous America that our children deserve and that you deserve. This will truly be the golden age of America,” said a statement underneath the image.

The updated administration section says: "After a landslide election victory in 2024, President Donald J. Trump is returning to the White House to build upon his previous successes and use his mandate to reject the extremist policies of the radical left while providing tangible quality of life improvements for the American people."

U.S. border authorities say they have shut down the U.S. Customs and Border Protection CBP One program that allowed migrants to schedule entry appointments with an app and cancelled existing appointments.

Trump did not express intentions to take back the Panama Canal during his campaign but began talking about wanting this vital waterway last month. During his inaugural address, Trump said the spirit of a treaty signed in 1977 by President Jimmy Carter that relinquished control of the canal in 1999 had been violated.

He said the waterway should have never been given away and said that “American ships are being severely overcharged and not treated fairly,” and repeated that “China is operating the Panama Canal.” Earlier this month, he said he would not rule out military force to take control of it.

Trump pumped his fist in the air before turning to exit the Rotunda, drawing hoots and applause from Republicans in the audience.

Trump says he wants to send American astronauts to Mars, saying he “will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars” and “plant the stars and stripes on the planet Mars.”

Billionaire Elon Musk of SpaceX threw his hands up in the air as Trump announced the U.S. would plant its flag on Mars.

The German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, "Today President Donald Trump takes office. Congratulations! The US is our closest ally and the aim of our policy is always a good transatlantic relationship. The EU, with 27 members and more than 400 million people, is a strong union."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy congratulated Trump on his inauguration, saying he was looking forward to "active and mutually beneficial cooperation".

"President Trump is always decisive, and the peace through strength policy he announced provides an opportunity to strengthen American leadership and achieve a long-term and just peace, which is the top priority," Zelenskiy said on X.

"Many people thought it was impossible for me to stage such a historic political comeback. But as you see today, here I am. The American people have spoken."

Inflation peaked at 9.1% in June 2022 after rising steadily in the first 17 months of Biden’s presidency from a low of 0.1% in May 2020. The most recent data shows that as of December it had fallen to 2.9%.

But other historical periods have seen higher inflation, such as a more than 14% rate in 1980, according to the Federal Reserve.

Trump says the election has given him “a mandate to completely and totally reverse a horrible betrayal” he says has taken place, “and to give the people back their faith, their wealth, their democracy and indeed their freedom. From this moment on, America’s decline is over.”

Speaking just feet from former Biden, Trump is delivering a forceful critique of the federal government, which he says “cannot manage even a simple crisis at home.”

He cites the wildfires in California and flooding in North Carolina, crises about which he has repeatedly spread incorrect claims. He also points to “a continuing catalogue of catastrophic events abroad” and illegal immigration.

They met the Bidens on a gold-trimmed red carpet, exchanging greetings and posing for photos ahead of a private meeting over tea and coffee.

“Welcome home,” Biden said to Trump after the president-elect stepped out of the car.

Biden wrapped his hand around Trump’s upper arm to escort him inside the mansion.

Outgoing Vice President Kamala Harris greeted the vice president-elect when he arrived.

Usually, only the president-elect comes to the White House on Inauguration Day before the swearing-in.

Harris and Vance have not yet had a formal one-on-one meeting after the outgoing vice president did not invite him to visit the official residence on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory.

Harris and Vance were accompanied by their spouses and all shook hands and posed for a picture.

Trump has left St. John’s Episcopal Church after a prayer service ahead of the inauguration.

He and his wife, Melania, are next expected to be welcomed by President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden, where they will share tea and coffee at the White House.

The private meeting is another presidential transition tradition.

It’s a stark departure from four years ago, when Trump refused to acknowledge Biden’s victory or attend his inauguration.

Trump will sign an executive order declaring that the federal government would recognize only two genders: male and female, an incoming White House official said Monday.

• The inaugural ceremonies for the president-elect and vice president-elect are planned by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, led this year by Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota. The committee oversees the following eight events on Inauguration Day:
• The procession to the Capitol
• The vice president's swearing-in ceremony
• The president's swearing-in ceremony
• The inaugural address
• The honorary departure of the outgoing president and vice president
• The signing ceremony, where the new president signs nominations, memorandums, proclamations, or executive orders
• The inaugural luncheon
• The pass in review, during which the president and vice president review military troops
• The presidential parade, which will take place at Capital One Arena in downtown Washington due to the cold weather.

For India, the inauguration ceremony is set to begin at 10:30 PM IST. Donald Trump will also deliver his inaugural address after taking the oath, a speech that traditionally sets the tone for his presidency, with US Chief Justice John Roberts administering the oath. Due to an Arctic blast bringing freezing temperatures to the US capital, Trump has decided to move most of the outdoor events, including the swearing-in ceremony, indoors. This marks the first time since Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration in January 1985 that the ceremony will be held indoors.

Donald Trump is set to take the oath as the 47th President of the United States today. Due to extreme cold weather, the inauguration ceremony will be held indoors and will be attended by prominent figures from politics, business, and other sectors.
