On December 20, BJP MLC CT Ravi was taken from Khanapur Police Station after an FIR was filed against him based on a complaint by state minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar. She alleged that Ravi used derogatory words against her in the Legislative Council. Ravi’s lawyer, Advocate Chetan, accused the police of denying them access to Ravi for 1.5 hours, despite the legal right to meet him during custody. Once allowed to meet, Ravi expressed concern for his life and wanted to file an FIR, but the police refused to register it. Chetan called the police’s actions "high-handed." R Ashoka, the Leader of Opposition in Karnataka, criticized the police for acting as an extension of the Congress party. He accused them of torturing Ravi, who was reportedly injured and bleeding. Ashoka condemned the situation as "goondaraj" and announced a protest, urging police to focus on law and order, rather than political interests.
