Heavy rains triggered by a depression over north Bangladesh and adjoining Meghalaya have caused devastating floods and landslides across five northeastern Indian states—Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh—resulting in at least 32 deaths in the past 24 hours. Assam reported 9 deaths, including five in Guwahati due to landslides. Arunachal Pradesh lost nine lives in two separate landslide incidents. Meghalaya reported seven deaths from landslides, lightning, and drowning, while Mizoram reported six fatalities, including three Myanmar nationals after a hotel collapse. In Nagaland, one person died in a landslip on NH-29. Guwahati and Tezpur recorded their highest-ever rainfall for May, causing urban flooding, school closures, and widespread displacement. Manipur rivers swelled beyond danger levels, threatening more breaches. Authorities are monitoring the situation, and emergency relief efforts are underway. Many residents in landslide-prone zones remain at risk, while the Indian Meteorological Department predicts some rainfall reduction in the coming days.
