This global event isn't just a cause for celebration, it's a powerful call to action. Established by the United Nations, World Environment Day serves as a platform to raise awareness about the most pressing environmental challenges we face and inspire us to find solutions.
History
Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, World Environment Day serves as a platform to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues and encourage global action. The first one was a conference held in Stockholm, Sweden in 1972 where pressing matters were debated and discussed. Since then, from 1973, and the tradition has continued on the same date.
Each year focuses on a specific theme, with past themes tackling pollution, wildlife trade, and sustainable consumption.
Theme
This year's theme, "Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience," with the slogan "Our Land. Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration," highlights the critical need to heal our planet's ecosystems.
Significance
Land degradation, desertification, and drought pose a serious threat to our planet's health. These interconnected issues impact food security, biodiversity, and contribute to climate change. Desertification, the process by which fertile land becomes desert, affects billions of people worldwide. Droughts, periods of abnormally dry weather, are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change, further straining our ecosystems.
2024 Hosts
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will host the 2024 World Environment Day global celebrations. The host nation plays a vital role in shaping the year's campaign and highlighting specific regional environmental challenges. Saudi Arabia faces its own struggles with desertification and aims to use this platform to champion land restoration efforts on a global scale.
Contribution
World Environment Day is a call to action for individuals, governments, and businesses alike. Here are some ways you can participate:
• Support organisations working on land restoration projects.
• Reduce your consumption of resources that contribute to land degradation, like meat and single-use plastics.
• Plant trees and native vegetation on your property or join community tree-planting initiatives.
• Spread awareness about the importance of land restoration through social media and conversations.
