A businesswoman from central China, raised in a family that favoured sons over daughters, has turned her personal journey into a successful e-commerce fashion empire.

According to a report by the South China Morning Post, Huang Xuanni, 44, was raised in a rural family in Binzhou, Hunan province, where she was the sixth of seven children and often ignored because she was a girl. Her parents focused on their only son, leaving her to eat alone outside and rarely even calling her by name.

Mainland reports recount a heartbreaking moment in her childhood when her parents abandoned her on a mountain after she fell ill. A passing stranger rescued her and returned her home. In her only childhood photograph, Huang’s grandmother lovingly holds her younger brother while Huang is relegated to the edge of the chair.

Reports from Mainland China described a tragic moment when her parents were allegedly abandoned on a mountain after she fell sick.  She was rescued by a passerby and returned home safely. In her only childhood photograph, her grandmother cradled her brother, while Huang’s was barely visible at the side.

Huang shared that her secondary school was miles away from home, and she had to walk nearly three hours across mountains each day. With only one yuan a week, she carried rice from home, which classmates often stole.

Huang enrolled at Hunan Agricultural University with the hope of shaping a better future. After graduating, she married her boyfriend and relocated to Shenzhen for a job in logistics. However, her marriage brought violence and emotional pain. Once divorced and separated from her daughter, she chose to rebuild hr life independently.

In 2015, she quit her job and invested 50,000 yuan in a clothing store on Taobao, owned by Alibaba Group. That year marked a major change in China’s online retail market, moving from low prices to a stronger focus on quality.

According to SCMP, she made over 100,000 yuan in sales in just one month. However, by 2017, poor decisions left her with five million yuan in debt.

By November 2023, the brand’s neo-Chinese dresses had earned over 8.7 million yuan in sales. By 2025, yearly revenue crossed 250 million yuan, or 36 million US dollars, and the brand had gained nearly two million followers worldwide.

Looking back on her journey, Huang told mainland media that she wants girls who feel trapped by family or marriage not to lose hope. She urged them to stay strong a little longer. She now plans to start an online course for the clothing industry to guide more women.
