Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made a quiet but powerful cultural statement with her choice of attire ahead of the Union Budget 2026 presentation, wearing a handwoven Kanjeevaram silk saree rooted in Tamil Nadu’s celebrated textile tradition.
The saree stands out for its deep purple base, woven in the classic Kattam pattern, with fine golden-brown intersecting lines that lend structure and rhythm to the fabric. The checks are subtle rather than bold, allowing the richness of the silk to take centre stage. Complementing this is a coffee-brown border, finished with restrained thread detailing, an aesthetic that reflects traditional Kanjeevaram craftsmanship.
The saree is paired with a mustard-yellow blouse, adding contrast and warmth to the overall palette, while the dark pallu draped across the shoulder enhances the dignified, formal look associated with Budget Day proceedings.
Kanjeevaram silks are known for their pure mulberry silk, durability, and distinctive weaving techniques, often passed down through generations of artisans. Sitharaman’s choice once again stresses her consistent practice of using Budget Day attire to spotlight India’s handloom heritage, turning a moment of economic policymaking into a platform for celebrating indigenous crafts.
In 2025, Sitharaman wore a Madhubani hand -painted ivory saree with a golden border. The saree was a tribute to Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, and Padma Shri Dulari Devi, who belongs to the marginalised Dalit Mallaah caste. The year 2025 also witnessed the Legislative Assembly elections of Bihar.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget 2026 today at 11 am, creating history by delivering the Budget for the ninth time in a row which is the longest continuous stint by any finance minister. This year’s presentation is also unprecedented, as it will be the first time since Independence that the Union Budget is tabled on a Sunday. With expectations running high, government sources indicate that the address will depart noticeably from the format followed over the past seven decades.
Ahead of the presentation, Sitharaman observed the customary pre-Budget ritual, paying a courtesy call on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan before proceeding to Parliament, in keeping with long-standing tradition.
