Tesla has quietly opened the doors to what is being seen as its first structured internship opportunity in India, signalling a deeper and more serious push into the country even before its much-anticipated retail and manufacturing roadmap is made official.
The electric vehicle major is hiring sales interns across eight Indian cities, Delhi, Mumbai, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune and Ahmedabad, a move that has already sparked buzz on social media, particularly among college students and young professionals eager to work with the global EV giant.
At Tesla, the sales team is positioned as the company’s frontline, not just selling cars, but shaping the entire customer experience. According to the role description, interns will support customers from the moment they walk into Tesla showrooms, helping them understand the brand, its vehicles, and the broader mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy.
Tesla claimed that the internship is designed to be hands-on and immersive. According to the US EV giant, sales trainees will engage walk-in customers, build customer profiles, explain Tesla’s products and services, schedule test drives, and help maintain a healthy sales pipeline by updating customer data on Tesla’s CRM systems. Interns are also expected to stay updated on EV trends and local incentives, while adhering to Tesla’s operational and customer service standards.
The requirements suggest Tesla is looking beyond just resumes. While prior customer-facing experience is listed as “good to have,” the company emphasises enthusiasm, communication skills, attention to detail, ethical sales practices, and the ability to work flexible shifts. A valid driver’s licence and a safe driving record are mandatory and a practical detail that underlines the role’s customer-interaction focus, including test drives.
Online, the announcement has drawn positive reactions. One user summed up the sentiment saying, “If this were just 2–3 years ago, I’d be all over this as an eager, enthusiastic college student. Let’s hope they find some good people for this.” Others called it a rare opportunity for students to gain early exposure to a global EV brand.
Beyond the hiring itself, the internship is being read as a strong signal of Tesla expanding its footprint in India. While the company has remained cautious about large-scale investments so far, opening multi-city sales internships suggests groundwork is being laid for future retail operations and customer engagement.
