Stomping on beds with dirty shoes, stealing bulbs: Guests at Rs 500 hotel stoke ‘civic sense’ debate

At a time when civic sense (or the lack of it) among Indians is a hot topic of discussion on social media, a video has emerged that has further stoked this fire. The clip, apparently recorded inside a hotel room in Agra, shows the visitors vandalising the property by stomping on the beds with dirty shoes, pouring water on the floor, only to wipe it with blankets before throwing them back on the bed.

In the now-viral video, the guests -- three young men -- claimed that the room rent was Rs 500 and proudly showed off the empty sockets after stealing the bulbs. The clip shared on X has drawn widespread condemnation from social media users.

"Someone gives you space at such a low cost at a world-famous tourist spot, and this is the behaviour," Nikhil Saini (@iNikhilsaini), who shared the video, wrote. "Running over beds with shoes, damaging property, zero civic sense. Paying 500 and still stealing things and trashing the room. Hope they are identified and held accountable."

The video received over a million views.

Reacting to it, an X user wrote, "And they self-record to show the entire world how great civic sense they do have." Another added, "How did these kids become so wicked and messed up? Moms always tell their kids to tidy up, to clean their room etc. If they did this at home, they would get a tight slap. Scolding and a clip on the ear. They need a 'DOSE'. And a huge fine plus counselling."

One user said he thought the men were animals inside a zoo and not humans inside a room.

"This kind of behavior is unacceptable anywhere. Affordable tourism should build trust, not destroy it," added another. "Hosts deserve respect and protection; such people should be held accountable to discourage others. Hope the owner gets justice and the culprits learn a lesson. Respect for hosts and places keeps tourism alive and welcoming."

Some users also highlighted the plight of the hotel owner.

"Imagine the cost to the owner! And his shock at seeing the room in this state. Very disappointing," commented a user.
