Rain stopped play about 30 minutes before tea on the first day of the fifth Ashes test on Monday, with Australia on 111-2 in their first innings.

The players had been taken off for eight minutes for bad light 50 minutes into the second session but storm clouds on the horizon meant it was only a matter of time before another disruption.

Debutant Usman Khawaja had made 26 in an impressive start to his test career, while Michael Clarke was four not out in his first test innings as captain of Australia.
