Not a doppelganger: What 'choppelganger' means in Gen Z slang

While there is no confirmed origin point, one of the earliest widely shared references appeared on X in May, when a user wrote: 'My dyslexic a** read this as ‘choppelganger’ and I think I just made a word for someone who looks like you but very slightly and subtly worse.'

The term is different from the established word 'doppelganger'.

A new slang term circulating among younger social media users has drawn attention for its meaning and usage, with the word “choppelganger” gaining popularity across platforms such as TikTok and X.

The term is different from the established word “doppelganger”, which traditionally refers to an unrelated individual who closely resembles another person. By contrast, “choppelganger” is being used as a derogatory label, New York Post reported.

Among Gen Z users, the slang term “chopped” has increasingly been used to describe someone considered unattractive. When combined with “doppelganger”, the resulting expression is understood to refer to a person who resembles someone else but is perceived as a less attractive version.

While there is no confirmed origin point, one of the earliest widely shared references appeared on X in May, when a user wrote: “My dyslexic a** read this as ‘choppelganger’ and I think I just made a word for someone who looks like you but very slightly and subtly worse.”

The term has since gained traction on TikTok, where creators have referenced it in videos and captions. One user, who said she is frequently compared to Mick Jagger, posted a video addressing the trend directly. The clip featured text stating: “If you think someone has a choppelganger, keep it to your d*mn self.”

The rise of the word has coincided with ongoing conversations about online language and generational slang. In 2025, Lake Superior State University released its annual Banished Words List, which identified several commonly used expressions that the institution argued were overused or had lost meaning.

The list included words and phrases such as “cringe”, “game changer”, “era”, “dropped”, “IYKYK”, “sorry not sorry”, “skibidi”, “100%”, “utilize” and “period”.

In a statement accompanying the list, the university said: “The fact that some of the same banished word suggestions came from different parts of the world underscores the universal struggle of dealing with challenging words and phrases.”

Meanwhile, one social media user summarised the meaning by writing: “Everyone has a choppelganger it’s like someone who almost looks like you but chopped.” The comment continued: “Or maybe you’re someone’s choppelganger idk. Food for thought.”
