Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw on Tuesday slammed the solid waste management department of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for not clearing garbage from the city streets. The Bengaluru-based executive chairperson of Biocon was responding to a video shared by an X user's which showed a long stretch of the Outer Ring Road covered in trash.

Calling it a "disgusting sight," Mazumdar-Shaw called upon the special commissioner of the Bengaluru civic body department to clear up the "ugly mess".

"Disgusting sight. BBMP SWM Special Commissioner needs to act swiftly to clean up this ugly mess," the 71-year-old billionaire entrepreneur wrote on X.

Several X users reacted to the Biocon boss's post and called for immediate action.

"Yes this is next to the same road.., even more, shameful is most of the expats, consulates, ministers, and even BBMP top officers stay in this locality and they take this route every day! We are not only letting our city down we are also letting our nation down by displaying such filthy habits," wrote X user Shreehari (@shreecreative). "Long back I myself took this initiative to clean up the area at my own cost and also informed locality and offices to at least continue to maintain or bring some action to stop this mess people dumping garbage on the roads... nothing changed habit continues..."

Another user Saavy (@saavy_m) added, "Sadly entire Bengaluru is like this even the residential areas which used to be kept clean by removing the garbage regularly have changed. Only residents who pay the BBMP pourakarmikas (sanitation workers) for kapi thindi get that favour from them."

This, however, is not the first time that garbage has been dumped on both sides of the Outer Ring Road. The stretch has often made headlines over the years for being lined with trash.

In December 2023, the Times of India reported that bus stands along the Outer Ring Road stank so badly due to the garbage dumped in the area that people steered clear of it. At the Kalyan Nagar bus stop, the overpowering smell of rotting garbage attracted stray dogs, making it unhealthy and unsafe for commuters.
