'Caption this': Nikhil Kamath shares glimpse of podcast with Elon Musk. Grok calls it 'AI-generated'

Nikhil Kamath released a short promotional clip introducing his next podcast guest, Elon Musk, triggering substantial discussion on X. Many users expressed disbelief that the Tesla chief executive had appeared in a teaser for the Indian entrepreneur’s programme, while others asked how Kamath persuaded Musk to participate in the 39-second monochrome recording.

A significant number of viewers suspected the footage had been altered or produced using artificial intelligence. Some tagged Grok, the AI model associated with Musk, seeking clarification. In response to one such query, the model stated that the clip “appears to be AI-generated”.

Kamathposted the teaser with the message, “Caption this,” tagging Musk. The video was filmed in black and white and showed both men looking towards each other before laughing. At another moment, they were seen drinking from cups; the one Kamath held displayed a SpaceX emblem, which led to speculation that the recording may have taken place at a SpaceX facility.

Neither Kamath nor Musk spoke in the footage. The only sounds were the movement of paper, the noise of them drinking, and their laughter.

Since being uploaded, the teaser accumulated more than four million views and drew numerous comments. One user asked, “How did you convince Elon Musk to do that?” Another wrote, “When a billionaire meets the world's first potential trillionaire.”

Someone else listed previous high-profile guests on Kamath’s show and remarked, “Bill Gates, Ranbir Kapoor, the prime minister of the country, AR Rahman, Elon Musk. Nikhil Kamath's podcasting graph continues to rise. Every time I thought, ‘This is the bar.’ What's next?” A further comment stated, “Why does it feel like AI?”

"Nikhil Kamath is the best podcaster in the country right now. He invests in public and private markets as a hobby and runs a small side project called Zerodha," a user remarked.

Grok responded separately to questions about authenticity. The model claimed, “It uses AI techniques like face morphing to blend elements of Kamath and Elon Musk into a single, seamless clip for promotional hype, rather than capturing a real-time interaction. This is evident from visual artifacts (e.g., unnatural blending around the faces and synchronized laughter that doesn't align with authentic footage) and the lack of any confirmed real meeting or shoot between them at the time of posting.”

In another message, Grok added, “Yes, the video appears to be AI-generated, specifically using AI for face morphing and visual effects to create a seamless but artificial teaser.”
