A post shared on social media platform X has triggered widespread discussion about gender roles, caregiving expectations and professional autonomy after it claimed that an Indian tech professional’s refusal to leave her job led to emotional pressure and, ultimately, divorce.
The account, which has since circulated widely, was written by a woman describing the experience of a close childhood friend. According to the post, the couple met while in school, continued their relationship through engineering college, and later entered the technology sector together.
“A childhood friend fell in love with this guy when we were in +2. They continued that relationship in BTech, joined in Tech Mahindra together, changed companies, got married, have two kids. Bought a home with their own money, living a life that is a dream for most of us,” the post stated.
The author said both individuals pursued similar career paths, securing employment at Tech Mahindra before moving to other firms, advancing professionally and building what appeared to be a stable dual-income household. The couple reportedly have two children and jointly own their home.
The post placed particular emphasis on the woman’s professional trajectory after motherhood. According to the account, she returned to work shortly after each pregnancy, taking only a six-month break following childbirth.
“Except for post pregnancy 6 months, she never took break. She went to office till 9th month. She is really really hardworking. She feels really happy working for her kids and husband,” the post read.
It further claimed that after her second pregnancy, the woman changed companies, learned new technical skills and transitioned into a different role, eventually earning more than her husband.
The situation reportedly changed when the husband’s mother became unwell. The post alleged that the husband asked his wife to stop working in order to provide full-time care.
“Now, the guy’s mother fell sick, and he asked her to quit working,” the author wrote.
According to the post, the woman declined to leave her job, citing the professional sacrifices she had already made due to pregnancy and childcare. Instead, she proposed an alternative arrangement.
“I will take care of finances… now you take a break, I want to continue working,” she was quoted as saying, adding that she would “help out as much as I can with home also”.
The author said the woman also suggested that her own mother could assist with childcare. “She even offered to ask her mother to come over to look after the kids,” the post stated.

That proposal was reportedly rejected. According to the account, the mother-in-law was “not comfortable having the girl’s mom at home as it is her son’s home”, despite the couple having purchased the property together.
The post further claimed that both the husband and his mother believed caregiving responsibilities should fall on the woman regardless of her employment or income. “It is the girl’s responsibility to quit when situation comes,” the author alleged was their view.
As disagreements continued, the post claimed the woman faced sustained emotional pressure. “When things didn’t go their way, they started emotionally abusing her in various ways,” the account stated.
According to the post, the woman eventually left the marital home with her children and moved back to her parents’ house. She later informed her husband that his mother could live with her and her parents if needed.
The response, the author alleged, was a legal notice threatening divorce. “Finally she filed divorce,” the post said.
The account concluded with a broader reflection on the expectations placed on women within marriage. “In a misogynistic system, no matter how hard a woman works, how much she earns, or how much she loves and how much she sacrifices, she is treated as worthless the moment she refuses to give up her autonomy,” the author wrote.
The post prompted significant engagement on X, with many users expressing support for the woman’s decision to retain financial independence.
“Have seen some lives destroyed due to selfishness of parents and the son not being able to stand up for his wife,” one user commented.
Another wrote: “Never leave career for in-laws. They find ways to abuse you and then you are not financially independent as well. I always say it’s the daughters or daughter-in-laws taking care of sick parents and not sons.”
A third user added: “That gifted girl should go through with the divorce, take 100% custody of the kids and erase the buffoon from her life.”
Meanwhile, a section of users who were not defending the woman had some other things to say. "If the girl is so strong headed she could have easily done what she wanted in her husbands house also without breaking the marriage & destroying her children’s life. After all the house was half hers also. Doesn’t make sense," a user remarked.
"If they have money, they can hire caretakers 24/7. So many people do that. It’s not about the solution. It’s the fact that she started earning more than him," another user commented.
