Navy Day 2023: History

The Indian Navy celebrates Navy Day on December 4, as remembrance for "Operation Trident" that was launched by the navy against Karachi Harbour during the India-Pakistan war in 1971.

The operation was started in response to Pakistan's operation Chengiz Khan which was a preemptive airstrike against the Indian airbase. The navy replied through "Operation Trident" and later launched "Operation Cactus" and "Python".

Additionally, the day is also celebrated in memory of the brave soldiers who lost their lives during the 1971 war.

The theme for 2023 Navy Day is "Operational Efficiency, Readiness, and Mission Accomplishment in the Maritime Domain".

Navy Day 2023: Celebrations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished everyone on the occasion on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday and confirmed that he will be Sindhudurg,  Maharashtra for Navy Day celebrations.

"On Navy Day, best wishes to all the personnel of the Indian Navy. Their commitment to safeguarding our seas is a testament to their unwavering dedication to duty and love for our nation. In every circumstance, their spirit and resolve remain unshakable. We are forever grateful for their service and sacrifices."

"I look forward to joining the Navy Day programme at Sindhudurg in Maharashtra later today. This place has a close association with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, whose efforts to build a strong navy are well known," PM Modi wrote on Monday.


PM Modi will also witness operational demonstrations by submarines, warships, aircraft and special forces from Tarkali beach. A statement from Prime Minister's Office said that he would also unveil the 43-feet-high the 43-feet Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue at Rajkot Fort.
