New Year's Eve is celebrated on December 31 annually.

The time to bid goodbye to 2023 is here. December 31 marks New Year’s Eve, the last day of the year, and people celebrate it with parties, feasts and joy all around. To count down to the first day of 2024, Google, on Sunday, also shared a quirky animated doodle.

The creative doodle featured lots of confetti and a revolving disco-inspired globe. “3… 2… 1… Happy New Year! This Doodle brings some sparkle and shine to start off New Year right! As the clock nears closer and closer to midnight, people around the world are planning their new year’s resolutions and wishing for success, love, joy, and everything in between,” an excerpt from the Google blog read.

In the Gregorian calendar, New Year’s Eve also known as Old Year’s Day or Saint Sylvester’s Day in many countries, is the evening or the entire day of December 31.

In numerous countries, New Year’s Eve is celebrated with dancing, partying, eating good food and watching fireworks as the clock strikes midnight and the beginning of the first day of the New Year.

Several people make resolutions and promise themselves that they will make positive changes in their lives in the coming year. New Year’s Eve is also a day to spend quality time with family and loved ones and also reflect on the past year.

The celebration of New Year’s Eve on December 31 is also intertwined with history. In ancient Rome, new year celebrations occurred on the first full moon in March with the festival of Anna Perenna, the goddess of the year.

In medieval Europe, the new year was celebrated on March 25, which was the Feast of the Annunciation.  This date marked the start of the new year on the Julian calendar, which was used at the time.

The celebrations were done on the same day till the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in the 16th century, which moved the start of the new year to January 1.
