Today is International Women's Day. The day is observed on March 8 every year and has been recognised by the United Nations since 1975 to honour the extraordinary contributions women have made. This year, with its 2025 Doodle, Google shines a spotlight on visionary women in STEM who have made groundbreaking contributions to the world of science.
In its blog post, Google wrote: "This Doodle celebrates International Women's Day and the artwork honours those whose work in space exploration, archaeology, and lab research has revolutionised our understanding of physics, chemistry, and biology. These women’s achievements represent only a fraction of the vast impact women have had in the world of science and innovation."
The Google Doodle features figures whose pioneering work continues to influence various scientific disciplines today. Women have long been at the forefront of uncovering the mysteries of space, discovering ancient civilisations, and advancing laboratory research in ways that have shaped our world. Yet, despite these monumental accomplishments, women still represent only 29 percent of the global STEM workforce, a figure that underscores the need for more equitable representation in these fields.

Women have shown their nari shakti in various fields. From using the ladle to rocking the cradle and making a mark in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), throughout history, women have defied expectations and shattered barriers, proving their strength, brilliance, and unwavering determination.
Pioneers like Marie Curie, who won Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry, Ada Lovelace, the first computer programmer, Rosalind Franklin, whose groundbreaking work on DNA transformed molecular biology, and Katherine Johnson, whose math was crucial for space missions, broke barriers and revolutionised science and technology. These remarkable women left a lasting impact, and their contributions continue to inspire and empower future generations of women in STEM.
Women's day is not just about celebrating how far we've come, but also about acknowledging the progress yet to be made, especially in fields where gender inequality persists. One such area is STEM.
The number of women entering STEM fields continues to grow each year, as more and more young women are inspired by the trailblazers who came before them. These groundbreaking women have fought against the odds and paved the way for future generations of female scientists, engineers, and mathematicians. Their efforts are slowly but surely reshaping the STEM landscape.
