Google marked India’s 77th Republic Day with a special doodle inspired by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), marking milestones such as Gaganyaan and Chandrayaan.

The Republic Day 2026 doodle features space-themed elements such as orbital paths and celestial designs, embedded in the tricolour letters of “GOOGLE”: orange, white, and green. Clicking the doodle takes users to Google’s official page, wishing, “Happy Republic Day.”

ISRO is planning multiple satellite launches for 2026. ISRO chief V Narayanan said on Saturday, “We are planning to send a lot of satellites this year. A lot of work is going on.”

Why is Republic Day observed on January 26?

The Republic Day commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of India on January 26, 1950. While India gained Independence from British colonial rule in 1947, it became a sovereign state when the Constitution came into effect 2 years, 11 months and 18 days later.

Facts About Republic Day:

1.   India's Constitution is the longest written Constitution in the world.

2.   It originally had 395 Articles and 8 schedules. Today, the Constitution of India contains 448 articles, structured into 25 parts and 12 schedules.

3.   The constituent Assembly took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days to draft the Constitution of India, beginning on December 9, 1946.

4.    The Indian Constitution was drafted by the Constituent Assembly of India, with Dr. B. R. Ambedkar as the chief architect and Chairman of the crucial Drafting Committee, leading the process that established India's supreme law framework

5.   The Constitution of India was adopted on November 26, 1949, and enforced on January 26, 1950.

6.   The original Constitution was handwritten both in English and Hindi – not printed.

7.    The Indian Constitution is known as a "bag of borrowings," because it uses ideas from over 60 countries, adapted to India's needs. Key sources include the USA (Fundamental Rights), UK (Parliamentary system), Ireland (Directive Principles), Canada (Federal structure), and the 1935 Government of India Act.
