World's tallest broadcast tower 'Tokyo Skytree' welcomed the millionth visitor to its 350-meter-high main observation deck today, its operator said.

The threshold was crossed by a family from Nagano Prefecture -- Rena Tanaka, 38, and her children Ryuto, 12, and Sana, 7.

After receiving a commemorative Skytree model, Ryuto said, "I would like to go up soon and have a look at Tokyo, which should look like a miniature plastic model."

Given the intense heat that has been affecting the capital, the tower operator has been providing tents and mist generators for visitors who have to wait outside to obtain admission on the day.

The total number of visitors to Tokyo Skytree Town, a new commercial complex featuring the landmark tower in Tokyo's Sumida Ward, exceeded 10 million on July 19, less than two months after opening to the public on May 22, according to the operator.

The operator expects 5.4 million people to go up to the main observation deck in the first year of operation.

The deck, leading up to the 450-meter upper observation deck called Tembo Galleria, has been popular not only for its 360-degree all-round view but for a straight-down view through its floor glass section.

Although the operator initially limited admission to the 350-meter-high deck to visitors who had made reservations online or via other venues, it has been selling about 10,000 on-the-day tickets per day since July 11.

People intent on reaching the 450-meter upper observation deck are required to buy a separate ticket to ride the elevator from the main deck.
