Critics Choice Awards 2024: 'Oppenheimer' leads with 8 wins, 'Barbie' follows with 6

The 29th annual Critics Choice Awards was held in Santa Monica.

The 29th annual Critics Choice Awards was held in Santa Monica, US, on Sunday night. In a throwback to the Golden Globes that happened last week, “Oppenheimer” sweeped the maximum awards with “Barbie” and “The Holdovers” in tow. In television, “Succesion”, “Beef” and “The Bear” were the big winners.

Chelsea Handler returned as the host for the second year in a row and called 2023 the “year of women”. “Women were victorious in all venues. “Barbie” at the box office, Taylor Swift and Beyonce with their tours, Gwyneth Paltrow and her ski trial. Women show up and dominate our culture. You could almost say it was the year of women. Women could say that. Bill Maher would say, ‘Is she still talking?'” Handler said.

Coming back to the winners of the night. “Oppenheimer” won the critics choice award for best picture again and beat films like “Barbie”, “The Holdovers” and “Killers of the Flower Moon”, among others.

The film on J. Robert Oppenheimer also won best ensemble, best supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr) and best director (Christopher Nolan). In addition, the movie also won best cinematography, best editing, best visual effects and best score.

However, the best actor award this time went to Paul Giamatti for “The Holdovers”. On the other hand, Emma Stone took the best actress award home for “Poor Things”, beating Lily Gladstone, Margot Robbie and Carey Muligan, among others.

Meanwhile, “Barbie” followed behind “Oppenheimer” with six wins, including best comedy and best song for “I’m just Ken”.

In television, “Sucession” took away the award for the best drama series. The best actor and actress awards were bagged by Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook respectively.

Billy Crudup won the award for the best supporting actor in a drama series for “The Morning Show” and Elizabeth Debicki was declared the best supporting actress in a drama series for “The Crown”.
