Tesla CEO Elon Musk made headlines on Tuesday with a witty Indian meme that he shared on X, where he took a dig at tech giant Apple over its integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT and its inclusion in its features, raising concerns about potential data violations.
The meme in question humourously illustrated "How intelligence works" with an image of a man and a woman sharing coconut water, accompanied by text discussing Apple's integration of OpenAI and the associated risks of privacy breaches.

This move by Apple had drawn criticism from Musk previously. He expressed concerns about data security and even went as far as calling out CEO Tim Cook, stating, "If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation."

In another post, Musk criticised Apple's reliance on OpenAI, saying, "It’s patently absurd that Apple isn’t smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security & privacy! Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They’re selling you down the river."

The controversy stems from Apple's announcement at WWDC 2024, where Craig Federighi, Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, revealed that ChatGPTwould be integrated into Apple devices, including Siri. This integration aims to enhance Siri's capabilities by allowing it to access context from various apps to provide more relevant responses.
Apple has reassured customers that using ChatGPT won't require registration, and those who have paid for the service will enjoy premium features without compromising their privacy.
