People lock stored water as Mumbai faces acute water shortage

Come summer, the water tanker, becomes a ubiquitous sight, in many parts of Maharashtra. Enter the northern parts of Mumbai like Bhayander and Gorai- and blue drums, their precious contents kept under lock and key, become as common a sight.

With the controversy surrounding the water crisis in the maximum city and with Bombay high court questioning MCA's motive in usage of water during the IPL matches, Network18 took a stock of the water shortages plaguing the city. While the scene looks much better in the southern parts of Mumbai, it is the northern parts and their suburbs that are thirsty for more, reports CNN-IBN's Smitha Nair.

Come summer, the water tanker, becomes a ubiquitous sight, in many parts of Maharashtra.  Enter the northern parts of Mumbai like Bhayander and Gorai- and blue drums, their precious contents kept under lock and key, become as common a sight.

The govt it is doing all it can, a water use policy is in place that prioritises drinking water. Civic bodies have been directed not to supply water to swimming pools. A directive has been issued banning rain dances this holi- the chief minister has appealed for this to be a dry holi.

But, this is not enough say those struggling to access clean drinking water.

There is much cause for worry as the stock in the 7 lakes that supply water to Mumbai has fallen substantially. a crisis mirrored in other parts of the state, particularly Marathwada- as lakes and reservoirs run dry, and water riots are reported.
