President dissolves Delhi Assembly, fresh elections soon

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung had recommended dissolution of the Assembly after the single largest party BJP refused to form a minority government. This was approved by the Union Cabinet on Tuesday.

The 70-member Delhi Assembly elected in December 2013 has been dissolved by President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday. The national capital which was under President's Rule since February will now hold fresh elections.Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung had recommended dissolution of the Assembly after the single largest party BJP refused to form a minority government. This was approved by the Union Cabinet on Tuesday.Soon after the President dissolved the Assembly, the Election Commission revoked its notification for bypolls to three Delhi Assembly seats scheduled for later this year.BJP and its ally Shiromani Akali Dal combine has 29 seats, AAP has 27 and the Congress has just 8 MLAs in the Assembly.
