Aiming to emerge as an alternative force in Tamil Nadu, the BJP is holding its state conference here for two days from tomorrow with a galaxy of top leaders, including L K Advani and party president Nitin Gadkari, expected to grace the event. The conference would set in motion the political agenda and action plan that would benefit the BJP to become an important player in the Tamil Nadu political scenario, party National Secretary Muralidhar Rao told reporters here today. The conference would also discuss important matters, including Lankan Tamils issue and problems affecting the state people, he said. "Like at the national level, we are fighting against corruption, in Tamil Nadu we will take up issues unique to the state," he said. About the low-intensity bomb explosion near here on May 1, he said whenever BJP tried to organise such conferences, it faced such problems.
"We have overcome the nature's (rains) fury, and we will overcome such threats." When Advani took out Jan Chetna Yatra here in October last, there was a threat and there were threats in Coimbatore, he said. "Now in Madurai again there are threats. We will not be cowed down by such threats. The BJP volunteers would come in large numbers to attend the conference," he said. BJP state unit president Pon.Radhakrishnan was also present. Tight security arrangements are in place with more than 3000 police personnel being deployed at the venue of the conference, which was earlier scheduled on April 28 but had been postponed in view of rains.
