Singapore envoy says South Indian food 'tastes like home', internet reacts warmly

Singapore's High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong, won hearts online by expressing his love for South Indian food and highlighting how food brings countries and cultures together.

On Sunday, Simon Wong shared photos of traditional South Indian food on X.

In the post, he greeted India and shared that he spent the weekend enjoying South Indian food. He said appam reminded him of home and asked people to name the dishes in the photos.

“Namaste India. Getting my weekend fill of SouthIndian food Appam. Can you name the dishes? Tastes like home. - HC Wong,” he wrote in his X post.

Simon Wong's heartening post struck a chord with many.

One X user wrote, “Appam with that fluffy edge perfection, Kerala chicken stew, prawn mango curry, veg korma & parotta! HC Wong, you've nailed authentic Malayali comfort food. Happy Republic Day!”

Another user commented, “Good to see that you are visiting and exploring different states and their cuisines and cultures. Also, come to Odisha, India's best-kept secret. The hospitality, food, and culture will surely amaze you.”

A third user suggested, “India has an amazing variety of foods. The taste & texture of food change with every district. Explore food from other states as well.”

Another wrote, “That’s Scrumptious & Beautiful Spread, Simon !!!”

About Simon Wong

Singapore appointed Simon Wong Wie Kuen as High Commissioner to the Republic of India on June 30, 2020. Before that, he was Singapore’s Trade Representative to Taiwan from July 2015 to January 2020.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wong graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Social Science in Sociology (Honours) in 1990. He later pursued a Master of Arts in East Asian studies from Cornell University in the United States of America in 1998.
