Chandrayaan 2 landing on Sept 7: Here's how you can watch the event as India creates history

If things go as planned, India will create history by becoming the first nation to reach the moon’s southern pole.

September 06, 2019 / 11:31 IST

Millions of people around the world would be eagerly waiting for Chandrayaan 2’s attempt to soft-land on the moon tonight. Chandrayaan 2 is expected to land on the southern pole of the moon at 1.55 am on September 7.

If things go as planned, India will create history by becoming the first nation to reach the moon’s southern pole. It would also make India the fourth country after the US, Russia, and China to pull off a soft landing on the surface of the moon.

India’s second unmanned moon mission, the Chandrayaan 2 took a lift-off from Sriharikota on July 22. After nearly one and a half month of its journey, the Chandrayaan 2 is currently orbiting around the moon at an altitude of sub-100kms from the moon’s surface.

“With this maneuver, the required orbit for the Vikram Lander to commence its descent towards the surface of the Moon is achieved. The Lander is scheduled to powered descent between 0100 - 0200 hrs IST on September 07, 2019, which is then followed by touch down of Lander between 0130 - 0230 hrs IST,” said Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Pragyan Rover, which is inside the Vikram lander, would roll out between 5.30 am, and 6.30 am on September 7.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi would see the historic event live from ISRO’s control room. Some school children would also be joining the PM in watching the Chandrayaan 2’s landing.

Chandrayaan 2’s historic soft-landing would be live-streamed on multiple platforms, including ISRO’s website. The organisation would also be posting live updates on its official Twitter handle.

Other than ISRO, Doordarshan (DD) would also be live-streaming the Chandrayaan 2’s landing on its YouTube channel.

National Geographic has roped in former NASA astronaut Jerry Linenger for live coverage of the Chandrayaan 2’s landing on the moon. The live-stream would be available for Indian users on Hotstar simultaneously with National Geographic’s YouTube channel.

Moneycontrol would be covering the historic event live on the website. Stay tuned as we bring the latest news and updates straight from ISRO.
