Today in AI: China has an underground market for AI chips, Softbank CEO is a 'heavy user' of ChatGPT and more

In the wake of US-imposed sanctions, China's underground market players are selling high-end AI chips from Nvidia at double the asking price.

• According to Reuters, the Huaqiangbei electronics area in Shenzen is selling the chips at $20,000 per unit, more than double the asking price. It's worth noting that buying or selling US-based components isn't illegal in China. But in the wake of US export restrictions, the vendors are careful not to catch the eye of the authorities.
• In November last year, US President Joe Biden ordered Nvidia to stop exporting two of its most advanced chips to China and Hong Kong, but the demand for these chips in the mainland has skyrocketed creating an underground market.

Masayoshi Son said he is speaking "almost every day" to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

• SoftBank Group Corp's Chief Executive Masayoshi Son said on Tuesday he is a "heavy user" of ChatGPT, the chatbot from Microsoft Corp backed startup OpenAI.
• OpenAI is looking to capitalise on interest in generative AI and exert influence on regulation of the burgeoning technology around the world.

Hallucinations are a significant ethical concern associated with LLMs. They occur when the model generates outputs that are grammatically and logically correct but are disconnected from reality, often based on false assumptions.

• For example, a model may mistakenly attribute a quote to a celebrity, one that was never actually said. Additionally, these models might assert false information about a topic or cite non-existent sources in research papers, thereby spreading misinformation.
• Recently, a New York-based lawyer found himself in a challenging situation when the use of ChatGPT led to the inclusion of fabricated legal cases in his filing. The chatbot generated a series of fictional cases and arguments, leading to serious consequences for the lawyer.
