Google Meet gets new update and it solves ‘biggest’ audio problem users used to face

Google Meet’s latest update enables full system audio sharing during screen presentations, addressing a long-standing limitation and improving how users share music, videos, and app audio in meetings.

Google Meet has rolled out a new update that addresses one of the most common issues users faced during presentations — limited audio sharing. The update allows users to share full system audio during meetings, instead of being restricted to sound from a single browser tab. This change is aimed at improving presentations that involve videos, demos, or multiple apps running simultaneously.

What the update changes

Until now, Google Meet only allowed audio sharing from a specific Chrome tab. If a presenter played audio from another app or a different browser window, participants could not hear it. This limitation often caused confusion during meetings, especially in work and education settings where multimedia content is frequently used.

With the new update, presenters can now share audio from their entire system. When users select the “Present” option, a new toggle labeled “Also share system audio” appears. Enabling this option ensures that all sounds played on the device are audible to meeting participants.

How system audio sharing works

The feature works when users present either a window or their full screen. Once enabled, Google Meet captures audio output from the device, including music players, video files, and third-party applications. However, the option is disabled by default and must be turned on manually every time a user starts presenting.

This additional step is small but important, as forgetting to enable it may result in audio not being shared during a presentation.

Supported platforms and requirements

The system audio sharing feature is currently available on macOS version 14.02 or later and on Windows 11 devices. Users also need Google Chrome version 142 or newer to access the feature. Google has noted that some users with adaptive or specialized audio setups may still be limited to sharing audio from Chrome tabs only.

Rollout and availability

Google is rolling out the update first to Rapid Release domains. Wider availability is expected in early 2026. As the rollout continues, the feature is expected to reach more users across standard Google Workspace accounts. By enabling full system audio sharing, Google Meet removes a long-standing limitation that affected virtual presentations. The update makes it easier for users to deliver meetings that rely on more than just slides and voice, improving the overall meeting experience.
