TikTok is testing a new revenue stream for creators
TikTok is testing a new tipping feature for creators through which they can accept tips. This is currently in limited testing and the option is only available to some TikTok creators.
Creator Jera Bean first discovered the feature and it was later reported on by TechCrunch.
Creators part of the limited test need to apply to have tips enabled on their profile. They must have at least 100,000 followers and meet the age requirement. Their account also needs to be in good standing.
If TikTok approves your request, you will then be given a "Tips" button on your profile, which users can click to donate fixed amounts or custom donations. Anonymous tips can also be made.
As it stands, TikTok will not be taking a cut from any tips given to a creator. Though, this may likely change in the future, if the feature gets past the testing stage.
Last year, the company announced a $200 million creators fund that was aimed at US based content creators.
“We’re always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience,” a TikTok spokesperson told TechCrunch, when reached for comment.
Social media companies are building more ways for creators to earn money on their preferred platform. Recently, Twitter launched a Super Follows feature, that allowed people to subscribe to their favourite creators on Twitter for a monthly fee.
Twitter also announced a three-month accelerator program for its creators which included financial compensation and publicity plus promotions on the platform.
