While 3D projectors have been around in the market for sometime now, they were just 3D ‘capable’ projectors, which meant you needed a PC or a Blu-ray player for the actual 3D processing. Vivitek however, have announced their new D5 series, which is capable of 2D to 3D conversion by itself. Three models are available on launch, the D512-3D which retails for Rs. 37,950, the D536-3D is for Rs. 53,130 and the D538W-3D that will retail for Rs. 57,684. The only difference between the models is the native resolution which ranges from 800x600 to 1280x800.

The D5 series is based on Texas Instruments DLP technology and supports a max brightness level of 3200 lumens. The contrast ratio is a good 3000:1 and the projector comes with a good set of connectors like HDMI, VGA, S-Video, Composite and audio-in options. It even has built-in 1W speakers. The 3D conversion works for both pictures and video. There’s no mention about what sort of 3D is supported - active or passive - and there’s nothing on the site about any bundled 3D glasses. The pricing seems very attractive though for what Vivitek are claiming. As far as the quality of 3D is concerned, we’ll know once we’ve reviewed it.
