Adar Poonawalla, the CEO of the world's biggest vaccine maker by the number of doses, told Reuters that he expects the vaccine to be a part of the government's programme by year-end.
“We have got 200 million doses of stock. We had to shut down production in December,” Serum’s chief executive officer Adar Poonawalla said at the India Economic Conclave organized by Times Network on Friday, saying he was worried about wastage if the shots expired. “I have even offered to give free donations to whoever wanted to take it.”
The Novavax shot, which the world's largest producer of vaccines calls Covovax, has shown good results in trials in children aged three and older, Adar Poonawalla told a virtual conference organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry.
The world's biggest vaccine maker exported 137,500 doses of Covovax, as it calls the shot, to the Southeast Asian country last week.
The approval, given to a licensed version of the drug made by the Serum Institute of India (SII) and exported to dozens of countries, could help health authorities minimise vaccine wastage and better plan their inoculation programmes.
“Deliveries of SII/AZ vaccine are expected to begin fully again by May, with catch-up deliveries to reach every participant’s full allocation up to May, accelerating thereafter,” a UNICEF spokeswoman told Reuters in an email.
Apart from making efforts to meet the requirements of India, the company is also trying its best to balance the needs of the rest of the world, he added.
Serum Institute CEO Adar Poonawala has told CNBC-TV18 that Cipla and Serum will not be merging anytime soon. Cipla and Serum Institute have joined hands to sell products jointly across various countries in the world.
Hitting out at the Narendra Modi government for doing "precious little" for easing doing business in the country, outspoken billionaire Cyrus Poonawalla picked out the health ministry as particularly failing in helping the pharma industry.
After tying up with drugmaker Cipla to market its products last year, the Poonawalla Group's Serum Institute, the world's largest vaccine maker, is considering the option of merging with it.
