Union Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Department of Fertilisers for fixing the Nutrient-Based Subsidy (NBS) rates for the Kharif season 2024-25 (April 1 to September 30) on P&K fertilisers
"Government has launched pilot on Digital Crop Survey (DCS) in the 12 states from Kharif -2023," agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.
The rice acreage stood at 16.46 lakh hectares in the corresponding period of last year, according to agriculture ministry data.
India's total rice production during 2021-22 crop year (July-June) is estimated at a record 130.29 million tonnes (111.76 million tonnes in kharif and 18.53 million tonnes in rabi season) as against 124.37 million tonnes in the previous year.
However, Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey asserted that the country will have surplus production in rice.
The estimates were finalised after discussion with state food secretaries and Food Corporation of India (FCI) officials in a meeting chaired by Union Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey here.
Paddy was sown in 390.99 lakh hectare in the year-ago period, the data showed.
Paddy is the main kharif crop, sowing of which begins with the onset of southwest monsoon from June. About 80 per cent of the country's total production comes from this season.
The area covered under paddy stood at 274.30 lakh hectare (LH) as on August 5, as against 314.14 LH in the year-ago period.
