Former World Bank Chief Economist Kaushik Basu today said the Modi government's decision to demonetise high denomination currency notes is not 'good economics' and the collateral damage of demonetisation is likely to far outstrip the benefits.
Expressing gratitude to all parties for support, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described GST as a "crucial step" towards ending tax terrorism besides reducing corruption and black money and said the new regime of indirect taxation will make consumer the "king".
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will participate in the meeting of Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers and try to iron out differences over the new regime that will subsume all indirect taxes and create one national market under the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
The Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers has to elect the new Chairman as K M Mani has resigned from the post subsequent to stepping down as the Kerala Finance Minister.
"After a decade of chronic under investment in Indian Railways we have decided we will invest Rs 8.5 lakh crore in Indian railways alone. This is extraordinary and will change the face of railways in India," Jayant Sinha said. Also, investment in roads has been doubled this year.
The landmark bill on GST on Wednesday won majority support of the Rajya Sabha Select Committee, which endorsed almost all the provisions while also agreeing to demands of parties like TMC for a five-year compensation to states.
Post passing of the Bill in the Rajya Sabha, model legislations will have to be drafted and circulated for public comments, laws have to be formulated both by the Centre and the State and IT changes have to be made before GST can be introduced in India.
The government is scheduled to table the GST Constitution Amendment Bill during the current session of Parliament for consideration. And, the FM is hopeful of having the GST legislation before year-end. "GST is a win-win situation for all stakeholders," he said, adding that it would, however, depend on political consensus and states' support.
