The first phase of Mumbai’s much-awaited underground Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, is set to open in October, transforming the commute between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Aarey. The line will halve the travel time to 30 minutes at a fare of under Rs 50, offering relief for commuters taking the congested Western Express Highway.

Here is what you need to know about the metro line:

Launch: Prime Minister Narendra Modi likely to inaugurate the line in early October.

Operational details: The first phase spans 12.44 km, featuring 10 stations with trains running from 6.30 am to 10:30 pm.

Frequency and fares: Trains will operate every 6.5 minutes during peak hours, offering 96 trips daily, with fares ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 50.

Initial capacity: Nine rakes with eight coaches each will service the stretch, with an estimated daily ridership of 4.5 lakh passengers.

Future expansion and connectivity
The complete 33.5-km corridor, from Aarey to Cuffe Parade, is expected to be fully operational by April or May next, with a projected daily ridership of 13 lakh. The underground design was chosen due to Mumbai’s dense urban landscape and to avoid disruption to surface activities, particularly near the airport.

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited is collaborating with BEST, the transport department and other agencies to enhance last-mile connectivity, integrating buses, autos, and other transport services.

Though full integration might not be available at launch, adjustments will be made based on commuting patterns. The Metro will eventually connect to both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 of Mumbai Airport, with infrastructure projects underway to ensure seamless access.

With its launch, Metro Line 3 is poised to significantly ease commutes in Mumbai, offering a faster, more reliable alternative to road travel.
