An MP-MLA court in Uttar Pradesh has summoned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to appear personally on July 2 in a defamation case filed against him for alleged objectionable remarks directed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Complaint lawyer Santosh Kumar Pandey said that one Ram Pratap had demanded that he be made a party in the case.

The case, initiated in 2018 by BJP leader Vijay Mishra, accuses Gandhi of making defamatory statements against Shah.

Gandhi's lawyer Kashi Prasad Shukla opposed a plea to involve Ram Pratap as a party in the case, asserting that Pratap is not directly involved.

Despite objections, the court dismissed the plea and instructed Gandhi to appear in person on the upcoming hearing date.
