The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Shimla, expecting a wintry mix of rain and snow starting today. The maximum temperature is expected to peak at 13.0°C, while the minimum will be a cold 4.0°C. Meanwhile, Mandi will experience a high of 12.0°C and a low of -2.0°C with reported ground frost.
Residents and tourists have been advised to layer adequality, carry umbrellas and be prepared for the weather.
As per IMD, cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are most likely to continue over some parts of Una, Bilaspur, Mandi and Hamirpur, and Cold wave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets over Kangra and Chamba districts during midnight to morning hours.
Light rain is also expected in a few places over Lahaul and Spiti, Kinnaur, Solan, Shimla and Sirmaur districts, and isolated places over Kangra and Mandi districts.
In addition to the cold wave, Shimla's air quality has also become a concern today, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) dropped to 122, classified as 'Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups'. The primary pollutant is PM2.5, known for its potential health risks, especially for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions.
