Chinese marriages slid by a fifth in 2024, further fanning birthrate concerns
Marriages in China dropped by a fifth last year despite manifold efforts by authorities to encourage young couples to wed and have children to boost the country's declining population.
More than 6.1 million couples registered for marriage last year, down from 7.68 million a year earlier, figures from the Ministry of Civil Affairs showed.
Declining interest in getting married and starting a family has long been blamed on the high cost of childcare and education in China. On top of that, sputtering economic growth over the past few years has made it difficult for university graduates to find work and those that do have jobs feel insecure about their long-term prospects.

Pope's point-man on migration and aid concerned about USAID cuts, alarmed at US migrant crackdown
Pope Francis’ point-man on migration and development has urged the Trump administration to remember Christian principles about caring for others, saying people are being “terrorized” by the U.S. crackdown on migrants and vital church-run aid programs are being jeopardized by the planned gutting of USAID.
Cardinal Michael Czerny, a Czech-born Canadian Jesuit, is one of the cardinals most closely associated with Francis’ pontificate and heads the Vatican office responsible for migrants, the environment, the church’s Caritas Internationalis charity and development.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Czerny said every incoming government has the right to review its foreign aid budget, and to even reform an agency like USAID. But he said it’s another thing to dismantle an agency after it has made funding commitments.

India expects stable delivery of GE-powered fighter jets next fiscal year after delays
India expects stable delivery of a domestically-made light combat aircraft powered by a GE engine in the upcoming fiscal year after a delay of nearly 12 months, a top government official said on Sunday.
India's state-run planemaker Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) would have the capacity to hand over 16 to 24 aircraft in the fiscal year that starts in April following stable delivery of the engine made by the aerospace division of GE, the official said.
The delivery of engines for the fighter jet named "Tejas" was due to begin in March 2024, but Indian defence ministry sources said supply chain constraints faced by GE impacted new deliveries beyond the 65 engines already delivered as of 2023.
The Indian Air Force is desperate to shore up its fighter squadrons, which have fallen to 31 from a target of 42, at a time when rival China is expanding its own air force.

Trump made his remarks to reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to New Orleans to attend the Super Bowl.
