The Padma Awards, which include the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, is one of the highest civilian awards of India. Every year, the list of Padma awardees is announced by the Government of India before Republic Day.

The Padma Awards, which were instituted in 1954, will felicitate India’s first female mahout (elephant trainer) Parbati Baruah (67) with the Padma Shri this year, recognising her contributions to the field of social work and animal welfare.
