Former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away in Delhi on December 26.

The last rites of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be conducted at Delhi's Nigambodh Ghat crematorium at 11:45 am on December 28, the Union Home Ministry said on Friday.

"It has been decided by the Government that State funeral will be accorded to Dr. Manmohan Singh. The funeral will take place at 11:45 AM on 28h December, 2024 at Nigambodh Ghat, New Delhi," the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in a statement.

Singh died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at the age of 92 on December 26.

The MHA said the Ministry of Defence has been requested to make arrangements for according the former PM State Funeral with full military honours.

Earlier today, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had urged PM Narendra Modi to have the funeral of Manmohan Singh at a place where his memorial can be built. He also said it would be befitting a leader of Singh's stature and in keeping with past traditions of having memorials of statesmen and former prime ministers at the very place of their funerals.

The former PM's mortals remains will be kept at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters for an hour from 8:30 am for the people and Congress workers to pay their obeisance. His final journey will commence from the headquarters to the cremation ground at 9:30 am on Saturday, party general secretary KC Venugopal said.

Congress Parliamentary Committee chairperson Sonia Gandhi earlier today termed Manmohan Singh's demise as a "personal loss", saying he was her friend, philosopher and guide. "In Dr Manmohan Singh's passing, we have lost a leader who was the epitome of wisdom, nobility and humility, who served our country with all his heart and mind," she wrote in an emotional note which was shared on X.

The government on December 26 announced a seven-day State mourning as a mark of respect to the former prime minister.
